OSIJEK, June 15 (Hina) - Deputies in the Osijek City Council from
the ranks of the Liberal Party (LS), the People's Party (HNS), the Social
Democratic Party (SDP), the Peasant Party (HSS), the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ) and the Pensioners' Party (HSU), who went over to the opposition at the
Council's inaugural session on Wednesday, have sent a letter to Chief State
Prosecutor Mladen Bajic, urging him to assist in in establishing what had
happened at the session. The letter reads that councillors from the
said parties, including HSU councilor Ivan Bernatovic, signed a declaration on
cooperation in the establishment of the city's representative body and in
electing its executive bodies, which was why Bernatovic's decision to abandon
the coalition agreement came as a surprise.
Bernatovic today voted for the election of Anto Djapic of the Party of
Rights (HSP) as Osijek mayor, Gordan Matkovic (HSP) as his deputy, and Branko
Lackovic of the Independent List of Branimir Glavas chairman of the Osijek City
Council.
The parties that wrote to Bajic believe that Bernatovic had been bribed
or pressured into voting for the coalition made up of the HSP and the
Independent List of Branimir Glavas.
LS leader and councillor Zlatko Benasic told Hina they had informed the
county police department and the Office for the Prevention of Corruption and
Organised Crime of the case.
