PM says local elections confirmed public support to HDZ and government's policy

ZAGREB, May 21 (Hina) - After analysing the results of the localelections, the National Council of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)has decided that the elections confirmed the position of the HDZ asthe strongest political party in the country as well as the support tothe Government's policy which will now be more oriented towardsreforms and association with the EU, the HDZ president and PrimeMinister, Ivo Sanader, told a news conference on Saturday.
ZAGREB, May 21 (Hina) - After analysing the results of the local elections, the National Council of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has decided that the elections confirmed the position of the HDZ as the strongest political party in the country as well as the support to the Government's policy which will now be more oriented towards reforms and association with the EU, the HDZ president and Prime Minister, Ivo Sanader, told a news conference on Saturday.

Sanader said that HDZ local branches would decide about forming coalitions on the field, after getting acquainted with the concrete situation. He called on other political parties to also adopt this principle.

Asked to comment on the announcements by Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) leaders Ivan Cehok and Djurdja Adlesic that they would not accept cooperation with the HDZ unless the president of the local HDZ banch Gordan Jandrokovic apologised for his statement given in an interview on Friday, Sanader said Jandrokovic enjoyed his full support.

The PM called on the HSLS leadership to let party branches reach an agreement on cooperation on the field.

Commenting on possible cooperation with the Croatian Party of rights (HSP(), Sanader said HSP was on a good path, adding that if the party stays on this path it would become a pssoble coalition partner.

The PM said the Government was stable and that its policy was confirmed after the local elections and stressed that there would no early parliamentary elections.
