ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - The Association of Homeland War Volunteers and Veterans sent an open letter to the government and the public on Wednesday, rejecting with indignation any attempt to criminalise the Homeland War and the Hague war crimes tribunal's allegation that Croatia's defence from rebel Serbs had been a criminal enterprise.

According to the letter, the allegation is an attempt to negate the Croatian people's genuine and just fight for freedom and independence and an attempt to criminalise the 1990s war.

The association said it expected the government to take an unequivocal position and in that respect gave it its support in principle. The letter said that all political factors in the country must defend the dignity and justification of the Homeland War at all cost.

Under the UN Charter and Resolution 871, Croatia, as an internationally recognised state, had the right and the obligation to take combined military and police operations to defend its territories which were occupied by Serb rebels and Serbian-Montenegrin aggressors, the letter said, adding that all Croatian legal institutions, including the Constitutional Court, assessed operations Maslenica, Medak Pocket, Flash, and Storm as legal, legitimate and justified.

"In defending Croatia, we waged the Homeland War on Croatian territory and if someone committed a crime behind the front line, it is known that our courts processed many cases, but we don't know if everyone was prosecuted. Nonetheless, this doesn't give the right to the Hague (tribunal's) Prosecution to proclaim legal and justified operations as 'criminal enterprises' and to hold criminally accountable all soldiers, generals, politicians and all Croatian officials who bore the brunt of the war," read the letter signed by association president Djuro Decak.
