Noting that relations with the world are of great importance to every country, Mesic said that Croatia wanted to play an active role in the fight for a better world. He said that Croatia should develop the best possible relations with its neighbours, Montenegro and Serbia, in order to overcome the existing open issues and help heal the wounds of the recent past.
In his address to the ambassadors, the Croatian president also spoke of the reform of the United Nations, saying that it was progressing "very slowly and with noticeable resistance."
"We need the United Nations, but this irreplaceable organisation should be adjusted to the times we live in and to the challenges of today and tomorrow. If we fail in reforming the United Nations, we take the risk of it meeting the fate of the League of Nations, and that is something we should not allow or accept," Mesic said.
He went on to say that Croatia was on the final part of the road that would take it to the European Union. "I have always advocated that road with conviction and I am certain that it is the only road Croatia could and should take," the President concluded.
Thanking Mesic on behalf of the ambassadors, the doyen of the diplomatic corps in Croatia, Papal Nuncio Javier Francisco Losano wished Croatia economic stability and international success as well as peace and stability in the entire region.
