ZAGREB, June 2 (Hina) - France supports Croatia's accession to the European Union and feels that Zagreb has made great headway on that road, which is important not only for Croatia but also for the entire region, French European Affairs Minister Catherine Colonna said after talks with Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic in Zagreb on Friday.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Colonna underlined that Croatia was a good example for the other countries in the region.

We will help it through bilateral relations and in the European framework to carry out the process of pre-accession negotiations well, she said.

Colonna said the pace of the Zagreb-Brussels negotiations would depend on how Croatia carried out reforms and met criteria.

Grabar-Kitarovic thanked France for its assistance and support, notably in institutional reforms, preparations for EU membership and the negotiating process.

She said Croatia attached outstanding importance to relations with France and wished to intensify them in politics, the economy and culture as well as to intensify cooperation in internal affairs, judicial reform, and the building of institutions in Croatia.

The Croatian minister said economic cooperation was the priority. Last year's trade was USD974 million, with Croatia's deficit accounting for USD578 million.

The two ministers agreed it was necessary to encourage French investment in Croatia.

Grabar-Kitarovic said cooperation was good in defence and the reform of the Croatian army. She added a EUR27 million project was signed as part of long term military cooperation in modern telecommunications systems.

She announced that agreements would soon be signed on police cooperation and civil protection, which she added would help the fight against international terror.
