LJUBLJANA, April 13 (Hina) - Slovenia on Thursday informed
Austria, Hungary and Croatia of its plan to regulate the flow of the river Mura
following criticism from environmental organisations that by giving
concessions for the use of the river's water power and considering the possible
construction of a system of hydroelectric power plants it neglected the
interests of the neighbouring countries and possible negative effects on the
environment. The Slovene Ministry of the Environment and Regional
Planning said in a statement that the possible construction of cascade
hydropower plants on the Mura would be coordinated with Austria and that the
matter would be discussed at the next meeting of the joint Slovene-Austrian
commission for the Mura.
"Croatia and Hungary will be fully informed of the possible start of
formal procedures in accordance with bilateral treaties, all international
conventions, good practices and within the Sava Commission and its bodies and
within the bilateral commissions for water management," the statement said.
