ZAGREB, April 10 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is satisfied with its results in Sunday's early local elections because it won 41 of the 120 councillor seats, which is the best individual result indicating a stable electorate, HDZ secretary-general Ivan Jarnjak said at a news conference on Monday.

Jarnjak added that without its coalition partners the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had won 38 seats or 31.6 percent of the vote.

The HDZ's election results are balanced, except for Pozega County, where the local HDZ leadership had resigned, Jarnjak said.

Asked if the HDZ would form a coalition with the Democratic Centre (DC) in Velika Gorica and independent candidate Stipe Gabric Jambo in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Jarnjak said the HDZ was willing to form coalitions with all parties except for the SDP.

SDP leader Ivica Racan told the press today his party was negotiating with DC leader Vesna Skare Ozbolt and independent candidate Stipe Gabric Jambo about forming coalitions in Velika Gorica and Dubrovnik-Neretva County.

Racan said that he was satisfied with the election result and hoped it would reflect in the composition of new authorities, adding that it indicated growing support for the SDP.

According to preliminary results, the coalition of the SDP, the Croatian People's Party (HNS) and the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) won 38.17 percent of the vote in the town of Velika Gorica. The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) follows with 34.63 percent and the Democratic Centre (DC) with 10.09 percent of the vote.

The SDP won the most votes in Pozega County (42.16 percent).

The HDZ/HSLS coalition won the elections in Dubrovnik-Neretva County with 32 percent of the vote.

Of the 11 seats in the Stara Gradiska Municipal Council, the HDZ won five, the HSS three and the HNS, the Party of Rights (HSP) and the SDP won one seat each.
