A memorial mass for victims of the NATO operation was held in Belgrade's St. Mark's Church, with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica attending. A wreath was laid at a Belgrade monument to 16 victims, employees of the Serbian state broadcaster, killed in the shelling of the company's headquarters.
The NATO bombing of Serbia and Montenegro started on 24 March 1999 due to the humanitarian disaster in Kosovo. It lasted five weeks until the signing of the Kumanovo agreement of 11 June, after which Kosovo was placed under UN administration.
The Serbian media today recalled that between 1,200 and 2,500 people were killed, 45 bridges destroyed and around 200 civilian facilities damaged in the 78-day NATO campaign. The damage has been estimated at USD 30 billion.
