If Ratko Mladic is not arrested soon, the negotiations with Serbia-Montenegro could be discontinued, Olli Rehn said after a meeting with local officials in Belgrade.
If Serbia-Montenegro fails to achieve full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the near future, it will produce negative consequences for negotiations on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) and on Serbia-Montenegro's European future, the EC official said.
Barroso and Rehn met the state union's President Svetozar Marovic and parliament speaker Zoran Sami, Montenegrin President and Prime Minister Filip Vujanovic and Milo Djukanovic and Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Miroljub Labus.
After the talks, Barroso addressed the state union's parliament.
During this session, deputies of the Serb Radical Party (SRS) wore white T-shirts with the image of the party leader Vojislav Seselj, a war crimes indictee, who is currently standing trial before the ICTY.
