BRUSSELS, Feb 8 (Hina) - In the past years Croatia has done a lot
to adjust its labour legislation to the European Union's acquis communautaire,
but will probably have to seek a transitional period regarding the
implementation of provisions governing safety at work, the chief negotiator for
the chapter on social policy and employment, Vera Babic, said on
Wednesday. Technical adjustment in the area of safety at work costs
employers a lot, because most companies in Croatia are in the process of being
restructured and are introducing news technologies, and allocations for
protective equipment additionally increase costs, she said.
The Stabilisation and Association Agreement provides for a 10-year
adjustment period in that area, which Babic said would serve as a good argument
in accession talks.
The explanatory stage of screening for this chapter will last until
Friday, and the second stage will take place from 6 to 8 March, when Croatian
negotiators will present the achieved level of adjustment of the Croatian laws
concerning this matter.
