The Croatian government today issued a statement distancing itself from the publishing of controversial cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammad in the latest issue of the "Nacional" weekly, stating that "articles disparaging and mocking another's religion, nationality, race or world-view should by no means be published in the media".
The ministry has notified the Croatian diplomatic network of the event, raising the level of security in diplomatic and consular offices abroad.
The ministry said that it cared about all Croatian nationals, particularly those in potentially dangerous countries, and that its future measures would depend on assessment of the situation.
The ministry is aware of the possible consequences of the publishing of the cartoons by a Croatian weekly and has sent a note to diplomatic and consular offices in Zagreb, including those of Islamic countries, informing them of the government's position on the matter.
Nacional published the controversial cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammad on the front cover of its latest issue.
