Drnovsek's office said in a brief statement on Monday that Drnovsek was leaving the LDS, the party in which he froze his membership when he was elected Slovene president three years ago, and that he would join the Movement for Fairness and Development.
Drnovsek has said that the movement gathers people who are dissatisfied with the lack of initiative of Slovene policy both on the home front and the international scene.
Slovene political analysts believe that Drnovsek's move reflects his wish to take a position in the political centre ahead of presidential elections to be held in two years, while some see his decision as a result of change in his lifestyle and political views in recent months.
