Commenting on the government's strategy for informing the public about the EU, deputies said that the debate on the matter proved that all parliamentary parties were agreed regarding the strategic goal of EU membership, which they said could reflect positively on the opinion of the public.
Deputies of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) said that the public should be informed about the meaning of the parliamentary agreement on EU membership, reached by sometimes strongly opposed political options.
Mato Arlovic of the SDP said that citizens should be taught how to appreciate and abide by the rule of law as envisaged in the EU and not how to get around it, as well as make it clear that EU entry would not be detrimental but would equate them in rights with other EU citizens.
Arlovic said such a campaign was particularly important for citizens with dual citizenship, who make 10 percent of the electorate and who should be encouraged to take part in the referendum.
Vlado Jelkovac of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said the public should be acquainted with the advantages of EU membership as well as the necessary reforms, possible consequences of non-membership, and the advantages and obligations EU membership brings to citizens and the country as a whole.
