Major Bosnian parties spend EUR 25,000 on media advertising per day ahead of polls

SARAJEVO, Sept 21 (Hina) - Ten major political parties that are running in the 3 October general election in Bosnia-Herzegovina, are currently each spending 50,000 convertible marks (approximately 25,000 euros) per day on their campaign, Transparency International in Bosnia-Herzegovina said on Tuesday.

This accounts for 65 average monthly salaries in that country.

Monitoring over the last two weeks the 10 most influential parties out of a total of 39 parties registered for the next elections, the TI organisation notes that the most money has been spent by the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) of the Bosnian Serb entity's Prime Minister, Milorad Dodik.

In the last fortnight, the SNSD earmarked 180,000 convertible marks (approximately 90,000 euros) only for advertisements in electronic and print media.

It is followed by the Party for Bosnia-Herzegovina (SBiH) led by Haris Silajdzic, the Bosniak representative in the Bosnian tripartite presidency, with 165,000 convertible marks (82,500 euros) spent on advertising.

The newly-established Alliance for a Better Future (SBB), led by media tycoon Fahrudin Radoncic, allocated 140,000 convertible marks (70,000 euros) for advertising in the first two weeks of the pre-election campaign.

The fourth-placed is the opposition Social Democratic Party with 120,000 convertible marks (EUR 60,000) used for its promotion in the media.

Transparency International warns that if they continue spending on media advertising at this pace, political parties will spend one million euros for this purpose.

According to the TI, the ratio between the strength of several major political parties and the funds they spend on advertising is evident in the Croat-Muslim entity (the Federation).

However, in the Serb entity, no other party can reach the amounts spent by Dodik's SNSD. Dodik is running for president of the Republic of Srpska and according to TI, no other candidate for this post has advertisements in the media.
