PULA, July 10 (Hina) - The Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) will run in November's parliamentary elections independently for the first time in its history, convinced of success due to the principled policy it has advocated from its establishment, its leader Ivan Jakovcic told the press on Tuesday.

He said a decision to that effect was made by the IDS Council yesterday. He added the party was aware that running independently in an election was more difficult than in a coalition and that it would not be easy to win four seats in parliament again, but underlined that the IDS would not fight for seats. The party ran in the last parliamentary polls in coalition with the Social Democrats (SDP).

"We will support a centre-left government, but not unconditionally. Our interests are a clear state decentralisation and the future government's support for projects the IDS wants to implement in Istria and Primorje-Gorski Kotar counties, namely in the eighth constituency," said Jakovcic.

Said the party's vice president and likeliest slate leader, Damir Kajin, "Croatia must not rely on only two parties, the HDZ (ruling Croatian Democratic Union) and the SDP, nor does it have to be their hostage. Although our campaign officially begins today, the IDS has been in campaign for 17 years, fighting, with the same goals, for the identity of the eighth constituency".

Kajin said that in 1990, before Croatia became independent, Istria had not been ahead of its neighbouring Primorje-Gorski Kotar County under any terms, whereas now it led the way in employment, exports, quality of living, social indicators and the economy, among other things.
