ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic on Wednesday
congratulated all Croatian citizens on Antifascist Struggle Day, saying it was
an important date in Croatian history when the first group of Croatian
antifascists, led by the ideal of freedom, launched an organised struggle
against the fascist occupation of Croatia. The fighters of the Sisak
unit began an uprising that not only saved Croatia's honour but also enabled
it to see the end of World War Two on the side of the victors, Mesic said in a
note.
That was the basis on which the independent Croatia was defended in the
1990s Homeland War as a free and democratic state, which rightfully makes
Antifascist Struggle Day one of the original foundations of our present and
future, Mesic said.
