ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - Greece has always supported and helped Croatia on its path to the EU and wants it to become a member as soon as possible, Greek Parliament Speaker Anna Psarouda Benaki said in Zagreb on Tuesday after talks with her Croatian counterpart Vladimir Seks.

Greece also wants the other countries in Southeast Europe to join the European Union so that this region can be a core of peace and cooperation, Benaki told the press.

Athens also supports Croatia's accession to NATO as membership strengthens cooperation and friendship among the peoples in this sensitive part of Southeast Europe, she said.

Seks and Benaki were agreed that Croatia and Greece had excellent ties.

This visit represents the further strengthening of friendly ties as well as their deepening, notably the parliamentary dimension, Seks told the press.

Cooperation between the two parliaments is excellent and we want it to be intensified and advanced further as in the EU's future national parliaments will play a much bigger and more significant role, decisive for the complete organisation and functioning of the EU, said Benaki.

Seks said Croatia would like to use Greece's experience and know-how from the EU accession process, and Benaki extended assistance in the adjustment of Croatian legislation to EU standards.

Seks accepted Benaki's invitation to visit Athens, voicing hope this would take place in due time.

Later today, Benaki is due to be received by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader.
