ZAGREB, May 28 (Hina) - Top Croatian officials - President Stjepan Mesic, Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader - on Monday held wreath-laying ceremonies in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb on the occasion of the Croatian Armed Forces' Day.

They placed wreaths and lit candles in front of the monument called "A Voice of Croatian Sacrifice - the Wall of Pain" and in front of the Central Cross in the dead Homeland War soldiers' section in the cemetery.

After that President Mesic held a wreath-laying ceremony at the mausoleum of national heroes from the Second World War.

Delegations of the government and the parliament visited the grave of the first Croatian President Franjo Tudjman.

Responding to reporters' questions about "differences in their protocols" and why President Mesic had not visited the grave of his predecessor, PM Sanader said that he and President Mesic shared the position on the role of President Tudjman in the establishment of the Republic of Croatia and its defence as well as in the establishment of its armed forces and the resistance to the aggressor.

"We share the same position and this is the most important. Whether protocols are adjusted or not is what we should see," Sanader answered.

Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic, a candidate for the new leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party, also today visited Tudjman's grave on this occasion.

Bandic said that the late president was an honorary citizen of Zagreb, and was one of Zagreb war veterans whose day was observed also today, according to Bandic's explanation.

Sabor Speaker Seks and a delegation representing the head of state also laid wreaths and lit candles at the joint grave with remains of unidentified victims from the Homeland Defence War.
