OSIJEK, May 24 (Hina) - The executive director of the New York-based Center for Interreligious Understanding, Rabbi Jack Bemporad and the Centre's President, Stephen Ollendorff, on Thursday presented the city of Osijek with replicas of a menorah, a seven branched candelabrum, which is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish people.

The replicas of the Yom Hashoa menorah were given to the guardian of the Franciscan monastery in the eastern Croatian city, Friar Zeljko Pauric, and to Osijek Mayor Anto Djapic.

One replica will be placed in the monastery's yard and the other one on the site of a World War II detention camp on the outskirts of the city.

The menorah project received a blessing from Pope John Paul II in 1999, Bemporad said, adding that the pope had received a replica of the Yom Hashoa menorah, too.

According to him, menorahs encourage people to read about the history of Jews and Christians and learn about their joint values and tolerance and peace in the world.

Menorahs, made by sculptor Aharon Bezalel, have so far been set up in several Christian churches in the United States. Osijek is the second place in Europe after the Vatican to have menorahs.

Also present at today's ceremony was the Auxiliary Bishop of Djakovo, Djuro Hranic, who said that the Osijek meeting between the Jewish and Catholic dignitaries was yet another confirmation of their mutual understanding.
