OSIJEK, May 7 (Hina) - Osijek County Court spokesman Miroslav Rozac said on Monday he had received a report from the Osijek Prison management saying that Branimir Glavas has been on a hunger strike since 27 April and that another three indictees in the war crimes case dubbed the Sellotape case began a hunger strike on 30 April.

Rozac said that he Glavas began a hunger strike on 27 April and that he referred to it as fasting.

Ivica Krnjak, Dino Kontic and Tihomir Valentic began their hunger strike four days later, and one more indictee, Mirko Sivic, joined them in the strike on 3 May.

The reason they cited for their action is their dissatisfaction with the court's work and their detention without valid reason.

Asked by reporters why it had not been reported earlier that Glavas was on hunger strike, Rozac said that he, as the spokesman for the court had not been notified about it before and that judge Darko Kruslin had been notified.

Rozac added that he had requested information to this effect following reporters' queries.

In today's press release, Rozac said that on 30 April the detainee Branimir Glavas refused to undergo medical examinations at the Osijek clinic although a prison doctor recommended such checkups.

Ivan Drmic, a parliamentary deputy and a close aide of Glavas, and Glavas's lawyers on Monday confirmed that this independent member of parliament was again on hunger strike due to his dissatisfaction with the court's work.

Drmic added that the hunger strike was the result of Glavas's dissatisfaction with the fact that he was discriminated against because other war crimes indictees, "including Serb aggressors who fired at Croatian citizens", had been granted provisional release pending trial.

On 16 April, the Osijek County Court issued an indictment against Glavas and the other six indictees in the Sellotape case. On 17 April, Glavas was placed in custody, and the detention of the other indictees who were already in custody was extended. They were detained due to the gravity of crimes.

The prosecution charges Glavas and the other six indictees with unlawful arrest, torture and killing of Serb civilians and civilians of other ethnic origins in Osijek in 1991 while the eastern Croatian city was exposed to the aggression of the Yugoslav People's Army and Serb paramilitaries.

On 30 April, the Osijek County Court again decided on detention for Glavas and the six other indictees - Ivica Krnjak, Gordana Getos Magdic, Mirko Sivic, Dino Kontic, Tihomir Valentic, and Zdravko Dragic - after the Supreme Court quashed the first ruling of the lower-instance court and ordered it to again consider a decision on the detention of the said indictees.

Glavas was taken into custody in Zagreb in the late autumn of 2006 during an investigation into another war crimes case, the so-called Garage case, before the Zagreb County Court, initially over his possible tampering with witnesses and later on grounds of the gravity of the crimes he was suspected of. He then went on huger strike, as a result of which his health deteriorated. He was released from custody in early December.
