The Austrian ministry received the request today, the Croatian ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The decision on the extradition of the retired general will be made by the investigating judge of the Vienna State Court, Claudia Forsner, which last Thursday released Zagorec from custody after he posted EUR1 million bail.
An investigating hearing into Zagorec began at the Zagreb County Court yesterday and is expected to last until March 29.
On March 21, the Croatian Justice Ministry sent the Austrian authorities a request for Zagorec's extradition, to which he objects, claiming the Croatian investigation is politically motivated.
Zagorec, who has lived in Vienna for the past seven years, is suspected of abuse of office, namely that in 2000 he took from a Defence Ministry safe diamonds he had received from a German arms dealer in 1993 as collateral for five million US dollars from the ministry intended for the purchase of weapons for Croatia's defence.
