ZAGREB, March 24 (Hina) - Interpol has issued a warrant for the arrest of a former Yugoslav defence minister, general Veljko Kadijevic, against whom three war crimes indictments have been filed in Croatia.

A photo of the 81-year-old Kadijevic was put on Interpol's website on Friday evening, with the explanation that he is wanted by courts in Bjelovar, Osijek and Vukovar, and that the former Yugoslav People's Army general speaks Serbian and English.

Croatian Justice Minister Ana Lovrin signed a consent for issuing an international arrest warrant for Kadijevic earlier this week, confirming that his extradition will be requested if he is arrested.

The County Court in the eastern town of Vukovar, which accused Kadijevic for war crimes committed in the area, requested that an international arrest warrant be issued earlier this month.

The first indictment against Kadijevic was issued by the County Prosecutor's Office in Bjelovar in 1992 over the shelling of civilian targets in this northern Croatian area. The indictment against him in Vukovar was issued in 2002 and the last one was issued last year by the County Prosecutor's Office in Osijek for the shelling of civilian targets in eastern Slavonia.

The arrest warrant for Kadijevic was issued in the wake of media claims that he was hiding in Florida and working for the Pentagon as an advisor for the war in Iraq. However, the US Department of State said that Kadijevic had not entered the US illegally. The Serbian press later said that he was hiding in Moscow.
