Bosnian judicial officials propose forming regional war crimes tribunal

SARAJEVO, Feb 17 (Hina) - The establishment of a regional tribunal for war crimes whose headquarters can be in Zagreb, Sarajevo or Belgrade, is the best model for overcoming problems that will crop up with the closing of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the President of Bosnia-Herzegovina's highest court, Meddzida Kreso, said.

Kreso supported an initiative for establishing a kind of the regional or Balkan court that may succeed the Hague-based ICTY. The initiative was recently presented by the Bosnian Chief Prosecutor Marinko Jurcevic.

"Prosecutor Jurcevic's proposal is acceptable provided that the Hague tribunal be closed," Kreso was quoted by Saturday's issue of the Dnevni Avaz daily as saying.

She explained that the regional court could work according to standards currently applied by the UN war crimes tribunal.

"Judges may be from Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia, and why not from Macedonia. Forming such a court will enable the search for war crimes fugitives who may not be available to the Hague tribunal while it works," she explains.

She also believes that this will solve the problems about trials of persons who hold dual citizenship given that the regional court would have an international character.

Prosecutor Jurcevic expressed his disappointment with politicians showing a lack of interest in his initiative so far.
