ISTANBUL, Feb 13 (Hina) - Turkey advocates Croatia's accession to the European Union and NATO, and Croatia supports Turkey's accession to the EU in line with its achievements, Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said in Istanbul on Tuesday.

Seks held talks with Turkish President Ahmet Nedzet Sezer and Parliament Speaker Bulent Arin in Ankara yesterday.

"Turkey advocates the open door policy for Croatia and as a NATO member strongly supports Croatia's accession to the alliance," Seks told Croatian reporters, adding that Sezer had said Turkey was impressed by the reforms Croatia was carrying out.

Seks recalled that Croatia and Turkey began EU membership negotiations on the same day, although the talks were later separated, and that they supported each other in their efforts to join the Union and advocated the evaluation of individual achievements.

Seks and Sezer also discussed the situation in the region. The Turkish president was especially interested in Croatia's position on Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I told the Turkish president that Croatia's position is that a solution to the Kosovo status issue should be sought in Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, starting from (UN special envoy Martti) Ahtisaari's proposals," said Seks, adding that Sezer agreed that the Kosovo issue could not be linked to "political trade and Republika Srpska".

Seks said he told Sezer that future constitutional changes in Bosnia must provide for the equality of all three peoples -- Croats, Muslims and Serbs.

The two officials welcomed the accession of Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia to NATO's Partnership for Peace programme.

Seks is due to return to Zagreb later today.
