BERLIN, Jan 19 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic was the keynote speaker at a working meeting called "Afghanistan: Our Common Challenge" in Germany on Friday.

The meeting was held as part of a two-day Partnership for Peace symposium called "Effective Partnerships", which was held in Oberammergau and ended today.

The establishment of security, the rule of law, reconstruction and development are interrelated and overall progress in Afghanistan depends on the equal realisation of each of those goals, said Grabar-Kitarovic.

Citing Croatian history, she underlined the importance of strengthening Afghanistan's state administration, notably in defence and the rule of law.

The international community has to step up its assistance to Afghanistan so that the authorities in Kabul can independently take over responsibility in all areas of public life, notably in the establishment of security, said the Croatian minister.

She said Croatia was proud of being able to contribute to the gradual stabilisation of Afghanistan as part of civil and military missions. She added Croatia had invited two Afghan diplomats to study at the Zagreb Diplomatic Academy, and that last year representatives of the Afghan Ministry of Women's Affairs visited Croatia.

The symposium gathered participants from 57 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Grabar-Kitarovic also met the commanders of NATO's school in Oberammergau.

Also today in Berlin, a Croatian delegation attended an informal meeting of labour and social welfare ministers of the European Union and the European Free Trade Association. Turkey's delegation attended too.
