The violence occurred after Kosovo special police and the UN Mission's police clashed with demonstrators who had tried to enter government and parliament headquarters and break the police cordon.
Police used tear gas and rubber bullets. Several demonstrators were injured and several were arrested.
The protest was organised by the Albin Kurti-led Self-Determination movement and Adem Demaqi, an activist and former political prisoner. The demonstrators rallied in downtown Pristina, carrying banners and shouting against UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari's plan and Kosovo's team for negotiations on the final status of the province. They also demanded that the UN Mission withdraw from Kosovo.
Kurti accused the Fatmir Sejdiu-led negotiating team of deceiving the Kosovo people, saying the team did not want Kosovo's independence but to preserve their posts in the government.
Demaqi said the demonstrators had not rallied to cause riots and violence but to show that they wanted to realise the Kosovo people's wish for independence.
Police stepped up patrols in front of important Kosovo institutions and the seat of the UN Mission.
