OSIJEK, Jan 10 (Hina) - The police department in the eastern Osijek-Baranja County on Wednesday interviewed two parliamentary deputies of the regional HDSSB party to obtain information related to breaches of the confidentiality of criminal proceedings.

One of the deputies, Ivan Drmic, told the press after a 10-minute interview outside the police department that he was questioned about the source of information he had made public in the parliament that independent MP Branimir Glavas was not being charged by any of the witnesses in two investigations against him.

Drmic said that the conduct of the police was fair, that he said what he wanted to say, and that he did not say anything that could harm some people. Drmic said that police interviewing parliamentary deputies for making statements in the parliament was an "attack on democracy".

At a news conference held in the parliament on November 21 by MPs Drmic and Vladimir Sisljagic, Drmic stated that no witness was either directly or indirectly incriminating Glavas and that the ongoing investigations were based on statements by only one witness in each of the two cases. Drmic said at the November news conference that one of the witnesses, Krunoslav Fehir, had changed his statement six times in several days, while the other witness, Gordana Getos Magdic, had been interrogated for 50 hours.

MP Vladimir Sisljagic told the press today that the police interviews with him and Drmic constituted the continuation of a campaign of political persecution of the HDSSB and another attempt to topple the current ruling structure in Osijek and Osijek County.

Sisljagic said that he had been shown two newspaper articles dated November 22, which were related to a news conference and which he said did not mention him in any way. He added that he assumed the only reason for his being interviewed were the photographs published along with those articles.

Sisljagic said the interviews were an attempt to stir up suspicion that HDSSB leaders were "involved in murky dealings".
