ZAGREB, April 3 (Hina) - Since 1991, 601 people have been killed and 1,589 have been wounded in 1,523 mine blasts, the deputy director of the Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR), Mirko Ivanusic, said on Friday when the centre joined in commemorations of the UN International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, which is observed on 4 April.

From 1991 until the establishment of the HCR in April 1998, a total of 1,312 land mine explosions claimed the lives of 495 people and 1,406 people sustained injuries.

Since the establishment of the HCR, which is headquartered in Sisak, there have been 211 land mine blast accidents with 289 casualties, of whom 106 were killed and 183 were wounded.

Over recent years, the number of casualties has been on the decrease, he said.

According to Ivanusic, Croatia still has to comb 954.5 square kilometres of mine-suspected areas in 111 municipalities and towns in 12 counties.

The HCR has organised several programmes to help raise awareness of mines on the occasion of International Day for Mine Awareness.

Since 1998, a total of HRK 2.785 billion has been invested into the removal of land mines and booby traps left over from the war in the early 1990s. Of this sum, 55 percent has been allocated from Croatia's state budget, and the rest has been provided by local authorities and public companies, as well as through donations from international organisations, other countries and foreign institutions, he said.
