"We ask the Supreme Court to change the ruling made by the Zagreb County Court and acquit Zagorec, or to quash the ruling and order a retrial," Hodak told Hina.
Last week, the Zagreb County Prosecutor's Office appealed the verdict against the 46-year-old Zagorec, asking the Supreme Court to increase the seven-year prison sentence imposed on the country's former assistance defence minister.
The Zagreb County Court in early March sentenced the most decorated Croatian general to seven years in prison for taking US$ 5 million in jewels from a Defence Ministry safe when leaving his post in 2000.
The jewels were allegedly used as collateral for the purchase of weapons during Croatia's 1991-1995 war of independence.
The court also ordered that, if the verdict became final, Zagorec's property be confiscated in the value of the stolen jewels.
