TOPUSKO, May 9 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic on Saturday dismissed as ridiculous the media speculations that parliament should be blamed for the escape of MP Branimir Glavas, who was on Friday handed a 10-year sentence for war crimes in Osijek and whose whereabouts have been unknown since yesterday's announcement of his guilty verdict.

Bebic said that the procedure for deciding on stripping Glavas of his parliamentary immunity would be conducted in accordance with the law and the Constitution.

During the announcement of the verdict in the Zagreb County Court, Glavas, and co-defendat Gordana Getos Magdic did not appear at the court, as this is not required by the law, while another four defendants were present and were placed in custody as their prison terms are five years or longer.

Glavas, a deputy of the HDSSB party in the Croatian parliament, was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment pending appeal for war crimes committed against Serb civilians in the eastern city of Osijek in 1991, while the other five defendants were given five to eight years' prison terms, also pending appeal.

Second defendant Ivica Krnjak was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment, Gordana Getos Magdic to seven, while the other three accused in the Sellotape case - Dino Kontic, Tihomir Valentic and Zdravko Dragic - were each given five years.

Glavas said in a recorded statement that was distributed to reporters on a DVD, that he had already been arrested twice on orders by Ivo Sanader and that he would not give the Prime Minister that satisfaction for the third time.

Later on Friday, Bosnian senior security officials told Hina that Glavas had been seen in in the southwestern Bosnian town of Tomislavgrad.

The Croatian Parliament's Credentials and Privileges Commission on Friday reported that it had received a request from the Zagreb County Court to strip member of Parliament Glavas of immunity so he could be placed in custody after he was found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to 10 years in prison pending appeal earlier in the day.

Reporters were told that the Commission was unlikely to discuss the matter before Monday.

MPs, regardless of their party affiliation, said it was impossible to put Glavas in custody without the Commission's approval and that he was a free man until stripped of parliamentary immunity.

Bebic said today that it was technically possible for the Commission to convene for this purpose on Monday.
