OSIJEK/ZAGREB, May 8 (Hina) - War veterans in the eastern city of Osijek on Friday afternoon gathered in front of the County Court building to express their outrage at guilty verdicts handed down by a Zagreb court against Branimir Glavas and another five defendants for war crimes committed against Serbs in Osijek in 1991.

About 300 protesters, including Leaders of the regional HDSSB party, Vladimir Sisljagic and Kresimir Bubalo, were among some 300 protesters outside the courthouse.

The head of the Osijek branch of the HVIDRA war veterans' association said that today's verdict was a disgrace for the Croatian state, describing the trial as a politically motivated process led by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader.

After the rally, the protesters marched through the centre of the city and some of dissatisfied people threw eggs at the building housing the offices of Sanader's Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and burnt the party's flag.

Commenting on Glavas's parliamentary immunity from being placed into custody, although he got a 10-year-prison sentence, Milorad Pupovac of the Independent Democratic Serb party (SDSS) said Glavas's term in parliament should not protect him from custody.

"This ruling is not about stealing hens or robbing a news-stand, but about the fact that no one can have immunity from this kind of crime and responsibility," Pupovac said.

Most other MPs refrained from comment.

Later in the day, the Parliament's Credentials and Privileges Commission received a request from the Zagreb County Court to strip Glavas of immunity so he could be placed in custody after he was found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to 10 years in prison pending appeal earlier in the day.

Reporters were told that the Commission was unlikely to discuss the matter before Monday.

MPs, regardless of their party affiliation, said it was impossible to put Glavas in custody without the Commission's approval and that he was a free man until stripped of parliamentary immunity.
