ZAGREB, May 8 (Hina) - Policeman Ivan Grbavac, who was killed in a bank robbery in the eastern Zagreb suburb of Sesvete on Tuesday, was posthumously awarded the Croatian honor for valor according to a decision by President Stjepan Mesic, and the central commemoration was held on Friday morning before his funeral in Zagreb.

President Mesic wrote in a book of condolence that Grbavac was "a man who gave his life defending us".

At the commemoration, national police chief Vladimir Faber said that Grbavac was killed while doing his job courageously, fairly and according to the police code of conduct.

"A shot at the police is a shot at a law enforcement officer and a shot at the state," Faber said.

In the bloody bank heist on Tuesday afternoon in Sesvete, Grbavac was killed and another four police officers were seriously wounded. One of the wounded was in critical condition until today, when doctors said that his condition was satisfactory and that he had undergone more surgeries since Tuesday. He was shot seven times and bullets injured his chest, lungs, left upper-arm and both legs.

Another two injured policemen are also still at hospital, while one was released in the meantime.

Immediately after the robbery, three men were arrested, including 28-year-old Kazimir Duznovic, who shot at the policemen from an automatic rifle. Duznovic has a record for felonies and was remanded in one-month custody, while another two men, who had alibis, were released.
