BELGRADE, June 26 (Hina) - The Serbian prosecutor's office for war
crimes has issued an indictment against 17 ethnic Albanians, former members of
the Kosovo Liberation Army, for war crimes in Gnjilane (Gjilani in Albanian)
in eastern Kosovo in 1999. The spokesman for the prosecution, Bruno
Vekaric, told Hina, on Friday that the indictment charges the 17 men with
brutal murders of at least 52 Serbs, Roma and Albanians and with rapes of
women.
The prosecution asked for the prolongation of custody by police for
nine of those indictees, who were arrested in Presevo, the Albanian-populated
town in southern Serbia, on 26 December 2008.
Another eight defendants should be tried in absentia.
