The commemorative service, organised by the Jewish community in Djakovo, brought together representatives of Jewish communities from Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia as well as those who survived a transit camp for Jews which was set up in Djakovo in late 1942.
Between 2,000-3,000 inmates, most of whom were Jewish women, were detained in that transit camp which existed for six months. Some 500 victims from the camp were buried in Djakovo.
The remaining 1,500 camp inmates were deported to Jasenovac, but they were killed on the banks of the Sava river, said the Osijek Jewish Community's head Damir Lajos at the commemoration.
