Gale force winds and heavy rains hit most of Croatia's coastal towns

Author: spez
SPLIT, March 5 (Hina) - Heavy rains and strong winds hit most of Croatia's coastline on Thursday, with gale force winds blowing between 70 and 140 kph the Makarska Riviera south of Split.

More than 17 litres of rain per square metre was recorded overnight in that area.

Most ferry services to the islands weren't running.

Gale force winds closed the bridge to Pag island further up north on the coast. Winds overturned a car and several waste containers were blown into the sea in the town of Pag. The town has been left without electricity.

The A1 motorway between the Sv. Rok tunnel and the coast was closed to traffic as was the D-54 Maslenica-Zaton Obrovacki, D-8 Adriatic motorway between Bakar and Sveta Marija Magdalena.

In light of inclement weather and red alert warnings being issued in some areas, the 20th international GAST food festival in Split was temporarily closed following a recommendation by the meteorological service.

"Due to the red alert issued by the meteorological bureau and the extreme weather conditions with gale force winds and possible tornados the GAST fair will not be opened on Thursday," the head of the fair's communication department Marija Hauptmann reported.

She added that the fair would operate normally on Friday.
