Three freight ships were blown ashore and several buildings have been damaged including the hangar where the 20th GAST food festival was being held and had to be temporarily closed down due to gale force winds of more than 160 kph.
In the last two days strong winds caused power outages in the region, ripping off roofs from apartment buildings, toppling trees and overturning cars and other vehicles and vessels. A truck driver incurred injuries on Thursday when his truck was overturned by heavy winds and later in the evening a fire-fighter suffered injuries while trying to upright a trailer that winds had blown over.
The Split City Council reported that around 40 members civil protection units had been distributed around the city to assist utility companies where necessary and although the mayor was abroad he has been informed of the situation, a city official told Hina.
A half-way house has allowed around 45 homeless to stay indoors in their day care centre.
Some schools remained shut on Friday to avoid possible injuries to pupils.
Air traffic was disrupted however most planes arrived at their destination, an airport official said.
