HDZ against reducing president's powers

OMIS, Feb 18 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) president Tomislav Karamarko said in Omis on Monday the powers of the president of the republic should not be reduced.

"The president has enough powers and they bring into balance the powers of the president and the government," he said in response to questions from the press, adding that since the president was elected directly, "by the will of the voters he is what he is and it wouldn't be good to change that."

Asked if the strongest opposition party would vote for the labour bill, Karamarko said it would not. "It's a bill at the expense of the working man, especially with regard to fixed-term employment."

Asked to comment on President Ivo Josipovic's support for the strategic investments bill, Karamarko said "that's not good" and that "the bill is very bad," as "it makes room for corruption" and an even swifter sale of Croatia's assets.

He dismissed the ruling coalition's remarks that assets were being sold also when the HDZ was in power. "In 2011, we had GDP growth in two quarters and they have nothing."

Asked with which parties the HDZ would form coalitions for this year's local elections, Karamarko said "our priorities are nation-building parties, therefore not the (ruling coalition) parties."
