HDZ criticises government's decision on regional aid map

ZAGREB, Feb 16 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) Regional Development and EU Funds Committee on Saturday reacted to the government's decision on a regional aid map, warning that the decision based on the 2012 division of Croatia into two statistical regions was to the detriment of less developed areas.

The prime minister's decision of February 14 has slashed aid for Slavonia by ten per cent, the strongest opposition party said in a statement.

The decision equates the City of Zagreb, with a EUR 17,500 GDP per capita, with Vukovar-Srijem, Pozega-Slavonia and Brod-Posavina counties, where GDP is slightly over EUR 5,000 per capita, the HDZ said.

Last year Croatia was divided into two statistical regions - Continental and Adriatic - whereas in 2007 it was divided into three - Pannonian, Northwestern and Adriatic.

The HDZ said a smart government would make changes in such a way that either no one lost or, if someone had to lose, it should be those that were more developed.
