Almost one third of this amount went for food, whereas one of the
smallest items - just below one percent - accounted for education.
If the expenditure for housing is added to food, it can be seen that
a half of the annual amount accounted for these two groups of
elementary needs, according to a poll which the Croatian national
Statistical Office, in cooperation with county branches, has been
conducted every year since 1998.
In 2000, the poll was conducted in 2,865 houses with 8,151 persons.
Although the funds which had to be earmarked for food were high,
they were on decline in recent years. For instance, 38.17 percent of
the entire spending went for this item in 1998 in comparison to
32.15 percent in 2000.
On the other hand the item for housing and power products rose from
10.81 percent to 13.33 percent last year.
The means spent for clothes and footwear were also on rise from 6.27
percent of the entire spending in 1998 to 10 percent in 2000.
Average Croatians in households spent 3.89 percent of the entire
expenditure for alcoholic drinks and cigarettes last year.
The average personal spending per household increased by 6,200 kuna
in 2000 as against such expenditure in 1999.
