"Speculators liquidated right at the end. There was some disappointed profit-taking from yesterday's run up," a trader said. "A lot of people came to the market yesterday thinking this thing was really going to go on the upside, but there was no follow through this morning at all." Most-active March went out 0.35 cent lower at 76.10 cents per pound, traded 76.78 to 75.95 cents. Volume was estimated at 6,500 lots compared to Thursday's official 6,341 lots. Late on Thursday prices picked up and ended firmer once the market fully digested the USDA's crop estimate for 1996/97. Although the third largest crop in U.S. history was forecast, lower stocks and higher exports helped to offset the effect of a bumper harvest forecast on prices, traders said. 161040 MET dec 96
