They blamed initial losses on speculative selling after the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued its December supply and demand report. But a closer look at the data contributed to gains later in the session, they said. The USDA put the 1996/97 crop at 18.738 million 480-lb bales, the third largest U.S. crop ever, compared with a forecast of 18.59 million bales in November. But ending stocks fell from last month and exports were raised, partially offsetting the stronger production figure. "Overall, the report was a wash," a dealer said. March ended up 0.28 at 76.45, traded 76.60 to 75.30 cents. The back months closed unchanged to 0.25 higher. Volume was estimated at 10,000 lots. March support was pegged at today's low of 75.30, a trendline on the daily chart, and then at 74.50, the 40-day moving average.
