Merino fleece prices were dearer, with the 19/23 micron indicators 0.5 percent dearer and 20/21m 1.0 percent dearer. The 24/25m categories were 1.5 percent dearer, 25m was up to 1.5 percent dearer and 26m 2.5 percent dearer, WI said. Merino skirtings were 1.0 percent dearer. In crossbreds, 27m was 1.0 percent dearer and 28/31m slightly dearer. The 29m category was unchanged while 30m was 0.5 percent dearer. In cardings, lambs were 1.0 percent dearer, locks 1.0 percent cheaper and crutchings generally unchanged. WI said there was good general competition with China, Japan and Western Europe active. Of 20,035 bales offered in both centres, 8.3 percent were passed in. "Heavy low-priced sales from two of the main Continental sources (of supply) have helped to prevent buying in the UK," one broker said. The recent strength of sterling has removed the opportunity to increase quotations in line with the cost of imported wool for blending while pushing up the price of UK exports, another added. The absence of major buyers from the market due to late holidays has also had a dampening effect on demand, brokers said. 241045 MET oct 96
