The run-up lifted the benchmark December contract through nearby chart resistance around $1,410 a tonne, but persistant origin selling trimmed gains, traders said. The most-active December contract reached a peak of $1,418 a tonne, before settling $10 higher, at $1,412, the contract's highest finish since August 21. December reached a low of $1,397 early in the session. Second-position March closed up $8, at $1,440, while the remaining months ended $6 to $10 firmer. Although today's activity appeared to be mainly chart-driven, traders said strong third quarter European grindings released in the past two weeks had bolstered market sentiment. "There has been a change in sentiment from neutral-to-bearish to neutral-to-bullish," one trader said. The Dutch third quarter grind rose by 16.69 percent versus the same quarter last year, while the U.K. grind jumped 42 percent in the third quarter. Last quarter's German grind was up a more modest seven percent, but it still surpassed analysts' expectations. Traders await the U.S. third quarter grind figures due Friday at 0845 EDT/1245 GMT. Industry sources expected the U.S. numbers to rise three and ten percent compared to the same period last year, following the strong European grinds. Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson said the market's reaction to the U.S. grind figures was likely to be muted unless the number is sharply removed from expectations. "The bulk of the information is already out there after the European grinds," said Stevenson. "By definition, after their release the impact of the U.S. grind is diluted." Volume reached an estimated 9,369 lots, up from Wednesday's official tally of 7,002 lots.
