Benchmark December futures climbed $17 on the day to $1,402 a tonne, settling just below its intraday high of $1,405. Today's rally, which dealers said was fueled by speculative and industry buying, marked cocoa's fifth straight positive close. "There is a definite change in sentiment, from neutral to bearish, to neutral to bullish," said one trader. "Breaking through $1,400 took a lot of work...there was heavy origin selling overhead." Traders said the unexpected increase in third-quarter German grindings reported on Wednesday, tacked on to a sharp upturn last week on both U.K. and Dutch grindings, reignited speculative interest in the market. The next key indicator of consumer demand is due in a week, when the U.S. third-quarter grindings are released. Technically, the latest advance took December delivery through the widely-watched $1,400 level, lifting it to a high of $1,405, the bottom edge of a chart gap dating from late August. If December were to fill that gap through $1,408, chartists said overhead obstacles were scarce until $1,440. "If we get another close above $1,400, there is nothing but air above the market," said Allendale Commodities analyst Jim Cordier. Following today's breakout, support should emerge at the $1,390 level, he said. Volume on the exchange was unusually high, at an estimated 12,417 lots.
