Copper loses steam by LME midday, others mixed
LONDON, Oct 17 (Reuter) - LME copper prices calmed down on
Thursday after officials confirmed rumours that workers at
Kennecott's Utah smelter went on strike.
Three month prices slid overnight to $1,900 per tonne
support after failing to chip away at upside barriers on
Wednesday, but advanced in early morning trade to a $1,930 peak
as rumours circulated of the strike.
The market then stabilised near Wednesday's closing levels
after officials confirmed a strike was on but said output was
continuing.
"It seemed to be the usual -- buy the rumour, sell the
fact," one floor trader said.
Some 1,800 unionised workers at the plant, which has a
under-used capacity of 310,000 short tons a year, went on strike
but the plant was still producing copper, officials said.
Copper ended the morning kerb at $1,914, up $1 from
Wednesday.
Stocks have been falling and the physical market is tight
but players are wary that a large portion of the disappearing
inventories are merely being stored in bonded Chinese warehouses
instead of being consumed.
The premium of cash metal over three months material
reflected the tighter market, rising several dollars to $13/$16.
Aluminium continued to make upside progress, scoring a
series of higher lows since October 11. It ended the morning $10
stronger at $1,352.
Some analysts cite renewed comsumer interest since prices
have stabilised after diving to a near 2-1/2-year low of $1,305
on October 10.
The rest of the metals echoed copper's confusing gyrations,
ending mixed.
Nickel held to a tiny range, ending $15 firmer at $7,080,
but failing in a bid to surmount the $7,100 level.
Last business in lead was off $2 at $741 and and tin was $5
weaker at $5,955.
Zinc held to the same $1,015-$1,025 range it has seen for
four sessions, ending at $1,020, down $3.
Alloy was indicated firmer along with the primary market at
$1,234/35 compared to $1,225/28.
