LME copper meanders lower, trapped in range
LONDON, Oct 16 (Reuter) - Copper ended Wednesday's LME
midsession slightly weaker, continuing its orderly slide after
failing at a key upside barrier on Tuesday.
Three month prices touched $1,952 but never really
threatened to challenge the $1,950 resistance which capped the
market on Tuesday afternoon. It ended the kerb at $1,930, down
$15.
Several traders said copper would likely range-trade
near-term in its recent band of $1,920-1,970, with a pivot
halfway between.
"It seems to like the $1,940 area. It tries higher and tries
lower and returns there," said one floor trader, adding that
there were probably some light stops under $1,920.
Aluminium joined copper in its dip, finding difficulty
holding the higher levels it has seen for the last several days.
It ended at its low of the day at $1,335, a loss of $21.
One floor trader said aluminium had been pressured early on
by modest fund selling, which gained momentum on the kerb.
Analysts said the market would have needed consolidation
around $1,350 to give it the strength to try higher levels and
start to negate the six-week downtrend. Some are expecting a
test of the October 10 low of $1,305.
Most of the other metals joined the lower trend.
Nickel shed $70 to end at $7,050, which is pegged as nearby
support.
Chartist Harry Creates of broker AMT said a head and
shoulders pattern is still in force, with a break of the $7,000
neckline targeting $6,200.
Tin lost grip of the $6,000 level, eroding to end the
morning at $5,970, down $30.
Lead headed towards recent seven-month lows, finishing the
kerb $11 weaker at $739.
Zinc only lost $2, closing at $1,020, while alloy was quiet,
last indicated at $1,217/19 after $1,230 on Tuesday.
