Copper slips by LME midsession, others off highs
LONDON, Oct 11 (Reuter) - Trade and producer selling knocked
gains in the copper market by the London Metal Exchange
midsession recess, though a sizeable fall in stocks of 18,450
tonnes was a stiff supportive factor.
The other base metals largely followed the gyrations of the
copper market in fairly brisk volumes.
Benchmark three months delivery copper was last at $1,957,
down on its high of $1,978 but little changed from Thursday's
LME kerb close of $1,958.
Despite its retreat several copper is expected to move
higher near-term, possibly to $2,000, traders and analysts said.
Traders said the earlier snap higher was on the back of
investment and Chinese buying, though the inventory fall was
largely expected.
Traders noted copper's vulnerability to unforeseen supply
interruptions, highlighted by an accident at Chile's new El Abra
mine on Wednesday in which four workers died.
A mine spokesman said the ore crusher and heap leaching
plants could continue working with stockpiles, but he was unable
to say whether the mine would be able to make copper delivery
commitments.
A 6,375-tonne stock fall helped aluminium to hit a high of
$1,339, though like copper the market finally succumbed to
profit-taking. Prices settled at $1,324, against $1,332.
Nickel eased back below $7,200 as recent short-covering
petered out. It was last at $7,150, versus $7,220.
The lead and zinc markets were broadly stable after small
stock falls, finishing the morning at $761 and $1,031, down $6
and $2 respectively.
Tin was at $6,060, down $15. Alloy was quoted at
$1,195/$1,200, against $1,200.
