LME copper whips around, ends morning firmer
LONDON, Sept 6 (Reuter) - LME copper flip-flopped on Friday
morning in a wary market, but ended slightly firmer after a
surprise stocks fall and physical buying provided some support.
Three month prices gyrated either side of Thursday's $1,925
kerb close, first popping higher after LME inventories showed an
unexpected decline of 2,100 tonnes, then losing steam and
sliding into negative territory during the first ring.
"We saw some physical trade buying at the lows, which helped
steady things," one trader said.
The stock fall, the first after a six-week trend of sharply
rising inventories, gave the market a boost after Thursday's
sharp losses.
Prices firmed again during the kerb, ending the morning at
$1,938, a $13 gain.
But the market remained nervous about continuing volatility
after prices spiralled lower on Thursday, plummeting $95 under
the weight of fund selling, general liquidation and
option-related business.
"People are running for cover very quickly these days. It's
getting very hard to follow any trend anymore," one trader said,
adding that big clearing banks and funds seemed to be calling
the shots.
"You might as well stick a pin (in a target) to find out
tomorrow's price," added another.
Spreads held around Thursday's weaker levels, with
cash/threes trading at an $8 backwardation compared to up to a
$60 backwardation earlier this week.
Aluminium lost more ground after a Thursday close under
$1,500 per tonne on Thursday pushed technical indicators lower.
Three months ended weaker but off its lows. Last business
was at $1,486, down $6 from a Thursday close that chartist Harry
Creates at broker AMT had pegged a key reversal.
Zinc tested nearby support of $1,039, but largely held its
stronger levels, finishing 50 cents off at $1,039.50.
Nickel slipped under Thursday's lows after a bearish close
but found support, paring losses to end $60 softer at $7,440.
Lead edged lower to $811, just above support, down from
$813/14 on Thursday.
"If $810 fails to hold, falls to $798 and $792 are
signalled," said Creates.
Tin edged higher to close morning trade indicated at
$6,245/50 after $6,225 on Thursday.
Alloy was ignored in the kerb, but last business was at
$1,280 versus $1,280/90.
