Traders said the market appeared to have absorbed the option-related swings of Monday, although there remains scope for further uncertainty when September options are declared on Wednesday. But with the spread premiums having narrowed significantly, much of the short-term tension has been defused. Cash to September is now around level, while cash/threes has contracted to $21/25 backwardation, against $60 at one stage on Monday. Traders said some shorts have been rolled forward into October, while others have covered in the run-up to September options. Generally, there is less concern over price spikes, they said. A small 500-tonne rise in LME warehouse stocks was supportive, as was a bounce away from the $1,970 level - a key point, as this was last week's technical break-out area. News of U.S. attacks on Iraq had little impact on market sentiment, as there are no big producers or consumers in that region. The only affect would be on currencies, they said. "The dollar has moved up and there is a feeling that copper is too high, so the strength of the dollar may have induced some selling," one said. Last copper business on the kerb was at $2,029, up $3 a tonne from Monday's kerb, but below an early peak of $2,045. Trade in the rest of the complex was fairly routine, with price movements not as extreme as those in copper recently. "Most of these metals fairly reflect fundamentals at the moment - there is not the scope for such big moves," another trader said. Aluminium was supported above $1,500 and concluded the kerb at $1,507, down $3. The 3,850-tonne stock rise was par for the course, traders said. Nickel is now looking to build a base after recent wide moves, and found support at $7,400, as sell stops are said to be lurking under this level. Last trade was at $7,440, up $25. Lead was quiet, and edged up to finish the kerb at a slightly steadier $819/820. Zinc hardly moved and was just $1 lower at $1,034. Tin remained close to overnight levels, ending the kerb at a stable $6,250. Alloy was also quiet and steady at $1,297/1,302. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 03. rujna 1996.
