Volumes in the copper rings picked up from recent lethargic levels. But other base metals were barely changed in sluggish trade. Three month copper futures ended the morning kerb session at $2,087 a tonne, up $48 from Friday's afternoon close of $2,039. But it was well off the pre-market peak of $2,165. The market had raced higher early on a potent combination of covering against short upside call option exposure ahead of the September options declaration on Wednesday, short-covering from funds and other players on the underlying futures market and generally thin volumes. But the move proved shortlived. A flurry of cash sales during the official ring sent cash copper to a low of $2,125, down from earlier indicated levels as high as $2,230. Cash/threes was indicated down to around $30 backwardation at one point before ending the kerb at around $49, still weaker than $60 backwardation late on Friday. "The market raced higher on options and futures covering, but volumes at that stage were thin," said one trader. "Since then volumes have picked up but values have retreated." The outlook for prices remained uncertain, with the possibility of further bouts of volatility in the run up to options declaration. On the charts some traders were looking for further gains towards $2,300, while first support was pegged at $2,050. Other base metals edged higher in response to a firmer copper market before giving up at least some of the gains on cash pricing sales. Aluminium ended the morning session $4 firmer at $1,516 after peaking at $1,519. Lead nudged up to $814/15 from $812 while zinc showed similar gains to $1,035 from $1,033. Tin firmed $15 to $6,270 and alloy ended at $1,310 from $1,285. Nickel was the only metal to end lower, shedding $20 to $7,470 after posting a high of $7,660. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 02. rujna 1996.
